After the Amazon EC2 crisis last year many were left with mixed feelings about the reliability of cloud hosting. Amazon has since learned what exactly happened and has and will continue to work on preventative measures to ensure there is not a second occurrence. The truth of it all is that many, while perfectly comfortable with cloud storage, still have mixed feelings about cloud hosting. The main reason for that is it is often not explained well in articles that tend to skip around from one thing to the next. So let’s focus on the basics of cloud hosting, the role it has already played, and will continue to play into the future.

Cloud hosting has some things in common with shared hosting but there are also some significant differences. Many authors are still in the dark ages when shared web hosting services used only one server for all their clients. When something happened to that server or when their traffic spiked, everyone’s sites went down. That has not been the case for some time. The advanced technology of web hosts includes load balancing technology, much like cloud hosting, where your website is available on multi-servers so if one should go down your site will still be live on another server. This allows most reliable web hosts to boast a 99.9% uptime guarantee. Also, both shared and cloud hosting are cost effective; however, you get much more for your money and have more control with cloud hosting as you only pay for what you use.

What exactly is cloud hosting? It is a type of internet hosting where the client leases virtualized, dynamically scalable infrastructure on a pay as you go basis accessed from web browsers, mobile phones and apps. Users usually have the choice of what operating system (OS) they use as well as being a “virtual server” environment in which resources can be quickly and easily added. Cloud hosting uses a large pooled network of servers that are off-site in remote data centers. When looking for a cloud service provider it is important to ensure they have a service level agreement (SLA), some type of back up available and disaster recovery protection.

What does cloud hosting offer?

Can scale up as you need it, almost instantly and if your traffic slows down you can scale down

You only pay for what you use (just like the way an electric meter works)

You can remotely access a cloud server whenever you need it and if you decide you no longer need it, you can disconnect

So, to re-focus we have: scalability, instant access and metered billing to save you money

Each website is mirrored to ensure consistent performance regardless of the number of visitors you have on your site

With cloud hosting the uptime goes up to 100% due to its automatic scalability

Cloud hosting gives you many of the advantages of dedicated hosting (owning your own server) without the cost involved

When you need additional services you simply increase your bandwidth allotment on your own

You will find your options for cloud hosting at this point a tad limited; however, as more and more people turn to the cloud for their online solutions, more competitors will appear which will drive the price down. Cloud computing technology has been around awhile, but recently it’s the latest buzz. Everywhere you look there’s an article on cloud computing and it can be overwhelming. The main points to remember about cloud hosting are: scalability, instant access, you can increase or decrease services from your plan at any time, and metered billing where you pay as you go.

Cloud computing will only accelerate in 2012. It is not just a trend, it is here to stay and evolve towards maximum performance. Companies will be focused on cost-effective considerations during cloud implementations. CSP’s will tailor their skills to get the most performance, scalability and security in place so consumers can be assured their getting the most practical and efficient hosting solution available with the cloud. Cloud hosting is the future. It would be in your best interest to further examine it as a potential online solution for your online business.

When it comes to getting your website files uploaded to your website hosting service or server, I’ve found that there are basically three ways to get the job done.

First, by doing a little research, most of the time you will be told to use an FTP program. FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol, and from my understanding, it’s pretty much the standard for uploading files. Personally, I’ve never had much success with it. But luckily, I’ve never had more than a dozen or two of files to upload, so searching out and using a more simple method wasn’t a problem.

I’m guessing that most small business owners and marketers will probably fall into this category as well and should be able to use the much easier methods I’m describing here without much of a learning curve.

OK, the second way to upload files, that is, if you’re using “C-Panel” as the main control module for your hosting service, is to use the built-in “file uploader.” The Icon or link will usually be located at the top of the control panel page and is easy to find and use. Just look for and click the link that says “Upload.” It will then take you to a page where you can choose “Browse” to search on your computer for the files you want to upload.

When you find your files, all you have to do is click on each one, then choose open. This will then automatically start the uploading process to the location that you started from in your hosting account.

This works pretty good as far as saving time and being simple to use, except for one small problem. If you have multiple folders with many files in each one that you plan to upload, you’ll first have to create an exact copy of each folder on your hosting service. Then, open each folder one at a time, and upload the corresponding files from your computer to that particular folder.

This really isn’t too bad. I’ve done it many times, but it does get time consuming if you have lots of files in these folders to upload. For example, say you purchase the resale rights to a particular video series or ebook, and you’re setting up the website for it. You’ll most likely have a folder for images, another for the sales page, and maybe another for the squeeze page. So, in this situation, you’ll need to create an exact copy of each one. So, it can turn into a lot of extra work.

The third way to upload your files without using an FTP program is by using “Compressed Folders.” This really has got to be the quickest and easiest way of all time. Here’s what you do: Go to the folder where all your website files are located. Next, press the “ctrl key” and left click on all the files you want to upload.

Once you’ve highlighted the files you want to upload, right click on your mouse and choose “send to,” then select “Compressed (zipped) Folder.” This will save all the files you highlighted to a compressed folder in any other folder you choose. Just give it a name you’ll remember, and click enter.

Now, go back to the C-Plane control in your hosting service to the directory to you want the files uploaded to, and click on “Upload.” When the uploader page opens, choose “Browse,” search your computer for the compressed folder you just created, click on it and choose “open” and wait for the uploading process to start.

When the uploading is complete, highlight the zip file and click “unzip” at the top of the control panel in your hosting service. The unzip software program will start, and all you need to do is follow the directions given. When finished, all your files and folders will be neatly uploaded and in place. As long as you have the Home page of your site named as “Index.htm” or “home.htm,” your site should now be visible for the world to see.

So, there you have it. By uploading all your website files to your hosting service using compressed zip files, then extracting them, you can save yourself much time and aggravation and get your website online quickly and easily.

What is wildcard domain hosting you say? Well, this is a simple feature that some online hosting companies offer their clients which allow them to create dynamic online communities or even corporate mail solutions both quickly and automatically. Wildcard domains are a dns setting that allows new paths on a server to be created by a website or script. Keep reading if you want to learn more about how you can use these hosts to power huge online community scripts and more.

Google Apps Account Integration

Using the power of wild card domains you can take full advantage of the Google apps account features like dynamically creating email addresses on your web server for your organization. This is just one of the many reasons that these wildcard hosts are so popular, taking full control of your domain with a Google Apps account is both cost effective and a very powerful online business collaboration tool.

User Generated Domain Names For Member Sites

You know what I am talking about right? When you go to a website and they are like, “Hey, grab a blog here and get yourname.oursite.com” and then you choose your own subdomain on their web site. These cool and automatically created web addresses do not come from thin air, they are being created using the power of wildcard domain dns records and you can do the same thing on your site as long as you are hosting with a company that offers this powerful feature.

How Do I Setup A Wildcard Domain Or Email Account?

In most cases your wildcard dns record will look something like:

*.yourdomain.com.

Now, keep in mind this dns record may vary depending on your hosting environment and the script requirements. So before you setup your domain wildcard, refer to your own script documentation and consult your web host.

Where To Get Hosting That Allow Wildcard Records

It is actually very surprising, but many of the webs biggest hosting companies do not allow this awesome feature. The fact is that the big name hosts are all about cheap, they don’t really want you to build interactive and popular websites because it costs them money in resources. So, in most cases you are best off with a mid-sized hosting company that utilizes a strong server and backbone infrastructure. The only way to find out if a web hosting company offers is to ask, this feature is rarely advertised, but a quick contact will let you know who can help you.

Web hosting companies can bring a lot of value to you when it comes to email, web presence and file sharing too. If your business has not already chosen a wildcard domain hosting company to handle your online infrastructure, then give the AlienServ team a chance. They offer LightSpeed web servers at killer rates. You can also get a complete and feature rich business email hosting package here.

For any small business to succeed in promoting themselves in this modern era, having an efficiently run website is essential. A well maintained online presence can set you above your main competitors and ensure you gain the most new clients as your business grows from strength to strength. Setting up your own website can seem difficult in itself, but organising the hosting of your web pages while monitoring and maintaining your content and internet security issues can be both time consuming and incredibly complicated. Instead of employing a web professional to join your team, why not consider hiring a managed WordPress hosting website to organise your servers and maintain your online presence, ensuring you and your customer base continues to receive the best service possible for the most reasonable prices?

All managed WordPress hosting companies work by hosting your web sites on their private servers. By allowing them to maintain the content and coding of your web pages you will remove a lot of the mundane work you otherwise would be lumbered with if hosting your own web presences on a privately rented server space. These companies offer a vast array of pricing options for you and some can be as cheap as the server rental costs experienced when hosting your own web sites. This also removes the need to hire expensive professionals or freelancers to encrypt your servers and preserve your online integrity. Ultimately by employing managed WordPress service companies you can relax and enjoy the benefits of having the most secure and up to date internet service as your customer base grows exponentially as a result.

One of the key issues many business or sales companies have to deal with in the online retail business is the issue of system security. Entrusting your payment procedures and detail handing to private untrustworthy servers is both reckless and very risky. Internet fraud is an ever increasing issue and allowing your customer’s details to fall into the wrong hands could not only land you with a bad reputation but it also could see your company subject to prosecution. Additionally, without a well encrypted server your website could become hijacked and be used for the transmission and transfer of malicious software. By hiring managed WordPress hosting services you are provided with legitimate, trustworthy servers and website management. They will use the latest encryption software to handle all of your customer’s personal and financial details ensuring they can never become compromised or duplicated. Additionally, this will keep your company’s details tightly bound in a web of secure coding and will prevent your company’s funds or delicate files and details from becoming distributed to untrustworthy fraudsters. One consultation is all it takes to secure your new server space, and once uploaded, you can enjoy the corporate reward of increased client satisfaction as your company expands and develops.

Web hosting doesn’t have to cost a lot of money. You can get shared hosting for dirt cheap as in less than a dollar a month, but what happens when you need more control over your resources than shared hosting hosting can provide?

What you would want to look at is a cheap virtual private server or VPS. With a VPS you have complete control over your hosting environment. You can define the server process, the amount of memory and even what can be uploaded and how much can be uploaded. Another benefit to having a virtual private server is that your environment is isolated. What this means is that you do not sure the space or the resource is with other accounts. If there’s another account that takes up a lot of resources in memory it does not affect yours. By the same token somebody else has a server that has problems or is infected with a virus it would not affect your account or your websites.

A virtual private server is the optimum environment for WordPress. Often times, WordPress is run in a shared hosting environment, the true power of this platform is realized when it is moved to a virtual private server. The same can be said of Drupal and Joomla — although they can be running a shared hosting environment, you can get the full capabilities of a virtual private server hosting situation.

Setting up a virtual private server is very easy to do. For the most part you sign up with a provider the same way you would with shared hosting, but the main difference is that you have to choose the OS that your server will run on, and the control panel. To make things easier many providers offer an operating system with a control panel already installed. The most common are Cpanel, Plesk, Kloxo and Direct Admin.

While you can install your own control panel, it may not even be necessary if all you want to do is install a WordPress blog. Same can be said if all you want to do is host static content such as HTML pages. The internet marketing gurus use virtual private servers to host there squeeze pages, or single page sales pages.

In essence, having a cheap VPS is the best way to go if you need complete control over your hosting environment, or a scalable solution that can grow along with your website.

It might be a bit confounding to understand what reseller hosting means. However, there is no denying the fact that it is one of the most popular means of making money by selling hosting plans. These plans work well for small companies that don’t have their own servers or are limited in their hardware components. They make money by purchasing server space from the main company and resell it to their clients on their behalf.

Irrespective of what your needs are as a private user or as a businessman, reseller web hosting will cover up all your needs adequately. In fact, there is a lot of flexibility in the platforms that are provided to a number of websites for getting hosted on the same server. Then there are also extra facilities that you get along with each of these accounts like control panels and master administration. It is also possible for creating hosting packages that are truly personalized. However, it all depends on the type of company that provides these packages.

Reseller hosting packages are suitable for those businesses and individual users who want to host more multiple websites, each of which belongs to different users. Multiple hosting is recommended when all the pages belong to the same company or person. The difference between the web hosting plans lies not only in the price, but also management and administration specificity. The primary domain name will be a common aspect as they need to follow this to comply with the master control panel’s rules. These hosting plans usually come with wider domains and cater to the needs of site owners of both individuals and large businesses.

People who wish to get the best out of reseller web hosting plans need to learn how to make a distinction between it and multiple domain hosting, as there is very little distinction between them. Reseller plans will suit you the best if you already have a customer database in place. However, most of these plans are expensive because they contain additional features and can provide you with lots of money going forward. Then there’s also a possibility of earning money as commission from the main company. The number of email accounts, the disk space and the bandwidth can be made known to the buyers and can be resold at prices they deserve. For carrying out other activities the user can make use of the platform as reseller plans allow task performances to be carried out through them.

It can be a real challenge to find reliable web hosts. And considering the fact that there are literally hundreds of them in the marketplace, your task is really cut out. So how do you compare these service providers and get to know which of them will actually serve your purpose? Well, there are few things you need to look into before choosing a host. Is your web hosting is free or a paid one? Is my hosting plan better than the rest? These are some of the questions you need to ask yourself whilst trying to find a provider.

Some of the best website hosting service providers offers their services at a premium. However, the same thing cannot be associated with low cost or free hosting providers. Most of these companies do have tie-ups with bigger portals like AOL and Yahoo. Also, these companies provide facilities like photo management software, community interest portals and emails. These are really straightforward and will help setting up your website quickly. But most of these features come at a cost! Website owners need to put up with Banner ads. And guess what? The owners will have no control over these ads whatsoever.

So it is entirely up to you in finding whether you want to choose a free service provider or the one that offer services at $5/month or less and then put up with the ads all over your website. If you don’t want your website peppered with ads you need to choose the paid ones. Some of the best website hosts in paid segment offer a wide array of services including: dedicated servers, unlimited bandwidth, unlimited emails, and e-commerce applications and so on. Though these service providers are a bit expensive, they’re sure help your website come up on the internet and have a steady life there.

As a next step in choosing a web host you need to identify your needs. For example, you may need to decide whether you need an e-commerce web solution or a standard hosting plan. You then need to do research on the internet and come up with top 10 hosting service providers, based on your requirements. Next, you need to contact them and ask for their quotation. See if their offerings are up to the mark and that their price comes within your budget. Also check out for their reviews from a legitimate hosting review site and base your decision based on them.

It’s never easy to select a web hosting service provider especially when you have no experience in this field. There are many things you need to understand before you set out to create a website for your own personal needs or business needs. Even if you have very little information in this regard, it should be of help. Given below are some different types of hosting services you’ll be confronted with in the market. Get to know all of them before making a choice for your website.

1. Shared Web Hosting

This form of hosting is really common. As the name suggests, you’ll need to share the server allocated for your website with other clients of your web host. The rates associated with this kind of service are low. However, you’ll not be able to control the server fully and also there will be certain limitations like you cannot install any software as it might affect other websites. The efficiency associated with this type of hosting service is not great, at least as compared to other forms.

2. Dedicated Server Hosting

This is quite opposite to shared hosting in that you’ll get an entire server to cater to your needs and you’ll not be required to share the server with anyone else. All you need to do is make sure that it supports the software and scripts that you may require later on. This form of hosting is relatively expensive and you’ll need to bear all the costs related to leasing an entire server. Also you need to have expertise or technical knowledge to tackle the problems that might arise in this form of hosting.

3. Managed Hosting

This form of hosting is somewhat comparable to the dedicated hosting. But, it is really expensive and is on a higher level. There is no real need for you to be an expert or possess technical know-how to avail these hosting services. All the operational work will be handled by your web host and this includes reporting, monitoring, load balancing, security set-up, system administration and software updates.

4. VPS Hosting

This form of hosting has got the characteristics of both dedicated server hosting and shared hosting. In availing these hosting services you’ll be required to share the server with other clients. However, you’ll get dedicated service as a small portion of server will be fully reserved for you along with the resources that come along with it. If you don’t want to be competing with others for using resources then this form of hosting will suit you best.

5. Free Hosting

As the name suggests, hosting services are free in this case. If you’re just starting out in business and have very little or no money to start then this is suitable for you. However, there will be limitations in space availability and you may have technical restrictions.

A website is the perfect vehicle to sell products to make an income from, it doesn’t matter what you intend to sell a website is the way to to. I’ve been using them to help me promote my business ventures for the past 10 years.

You can sell pretty much anything from a website, whether you are selling your own products (books, music, crafts, etc) or whether you are going to sell other people’s products, it is an essential tool. I have a friend who runs a website that specialises in selling the sweets we all loved as a kid, how ingenious is that?

If you fancy selling something like mexican pottery then a web site would be perfect, you don’t need to fill your bedroom up with stock. You simply advertise what your local wholesale mexican pottery supplier has and then when you make a sale you pop along and pick up what you need.
