PlayStation Vita: Worth the Hype or a Prettified PlayStation Portable?

Sony released the PlayStation Vita this year to supersede the PSP, also known as the PlayStation Portable. Before rushing to the store to get the latest handheld gaming console, it’s useful to know what changes have been made from one model to the next. 

Price

The first and most obvious difference is the price. The PSP sold for $130 in its original and lite versions, while the PS Vita has a suggested retail price of $250 for the Wi-Fi only model and $300 for the 3G model that provides an Internet connection anywhere you go. Next, take a look at the difference in size between the two. The PlayStation Vita is both wider and taller than the PSP, but is not as thick. The screen size also gets an increase from 4.3 inches on the PSP 3000, up to a 5-inch touchscreen with the Vita. 

Storage

The original PSP systems including the 1,000, 2,000 and 3,000 used the UMD or Universal Media Discs, which could hold up to 1.8GB of data. They also supported downloading some games from the PlayStation Network. The Vita, on the other hand, uses the NVG Card. It is a flash card that is similar to how Nintendo creates games for the 3DS. They can hold from 2 to 4GB of data and there are currently talks of making larger cards in the future to hold bigger games that get released. 

Internal storage is not something you’ll want to look for with the PlayStation Vita. It contains a storage media slot that allows you to insert and remove memory cards at your leisure to hold digitally downloaded games from the network, which tend to get pretty large. Game data itself can be stored on the NVG game card. The PSP used either Memory Stick PRO Duo or Memory Stick Micro cards to hold excess data. 

Added Touchpad

Both devices have the typical D-pad controls that are found with PlayStation devices, but the Vita adds menu navigation through the touchscreen and a rear touchpad. It also has both a built-in gyroscope and accelerometer to enhance the gaming experience. Take note that the Vita, unlike the PSP, does not support video out so you cannot connect the device to a larger screen like a monitor or a television. 

New Features

The Vita introduces quite a few new features that make it worth checking out. It has an integrated GPS to locate where you are and find places around you, built-in microphone, CrossPlay support to allow you to play with individuals on the PS3 and both front and rear facing cameras. These make it possible to play AR games that are based on your real-life surroundings to create objects and characters. 
The Vita also expands on multiplayer gaming with the Near service, which uses GPS to help you locate gamers that are nearby and to detect what games they’re playing. It’s also possible to detect trophies and create chat rooms with a select few individuals from your friend’s list.
